11 Screaming Steam Train Rides This Halloween (2016)

Are you brave enough to try one of these hair-raising trick or treat train rides this Halloween?

I’m a big fan of tiny trains and a tiny fan of big trains and when not doing stuff with the family, socialising, tinkering with my model railways or stuff around the house (in that order) I can usually be found lurking around heritage railways.

So for Halloween 2016 I’m heading off to my favourite railways for a weekend of steam screams.

If this appeals here’s my pick of the best train tingling rides to make your skin crawl this October All-Hallows weekend.

Watercress Line (Mid Hants)

Event: Wizard Weekend
What to expect: Go dressed as a witch, wizard or Halloween spook and find out about all things magical.
When’s it on: 29th — 30th October 2016


Severn Valley Railway (Worcestershire)

Event: Ghost Train Ride
What to expect: A ride on the Ghost Train passing through haunted stations. Dare to take a thrilling ride in the dark!
When is it on: 27th — 29th October


Epping Ongar Railway (Essex)

Event: Steam and Scream Halloween Specials
What to expect: Ghost trains and Halloween fun.
When is it on: 28th — 31st October


Romey, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway (Kent)

Event: Halloween Special
What to expect: Doctor Syn pulls this steam hauled Special from Hythe Station at 15:10 across the misty-Marsh.
When is it on: 27th — 30th October


Spa Valley Railway (East Sussex)

Event: Fright Night Express
What to expect: Pumpkin and fancy competitions, Ghost trains and haunted engine shed.
When is it on: 29th October


Llangollen Railway (Denbighshire)

Event: Halloween Trains
What to expect: Spooky storytelling on the train as the train travels through the dark and creepy Dee Valley.
When is it on: 30th Oct 2016


Great Central Railway (Leicestershire)

Event: Halloween Steam & Scream
What to expect: Ride on after dark ghost trains — who knows what ghastly or ghoulish creatures you’ll meet on board
When is it on: 31st October


East Lancashire Railway (East Lancs)

Event: Halloween Ghost Trains
What to expect: Will you be brave enough to search the carriage of doom? Ride the Ghost Train of Ghouls and meet the friendly freaks of the Creepy Carnival Spooktacular
When is it on: 28th — 31st October


Ffestiniog Railway (Welsh Highlands)

Event: Halloween Trains
What to expect: Three evenings of Fiendish Family Frolics; filled with creepy costumes, crazy capers and chilling competitions.
When is it on: 27th — 29th October


Strathspey Railway (Scotland)

Event: Halloween Express
What to expect: Forget the trick, take the whole family for a fun Halloween treat.
When is it on: 29th October


Downpatrick & County Down Railway

Event: Spooky Halloween trains
What to expect: Steam train ride along to the haunted graveyard, then back on board to visit Merlin the Magician in his magical cavern.
When is it on: 29th — 31st October
